The Solved Conflict: Pope Francis and Liberation Theology

Abstract The battle for meaning and influence between Latin American liberations theologians the Vatican was one of most significant conflicts in global Catholic church twentieth century. With election Argentinean Jorge Mario Bergoglio as head 2013, question about legacy liberation theology actualized. canonization Archbishop Oscar Romero pope’s approximation to public figure Gustavo Gutiérrez signaled a new approach movement Vatican. This article argues that Pope Francis shares some main theological concerns pontiff with theology. Although pope remains an outsider theology, he has sense solved conflict social movement. Through analysis ecclesial documents literature, his can be discerned on three levels. First, Francis’ use certain ideas from been made possible less controversial by post-cold war contexts. Second, contributed solution this through symbolic gestures rather than shift official positions. Third, Francis, Argentinian appropriated elements are specific without acknowledging intellectual debt it.
